Kroger Joins How2Recycle Labeling Program

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA, September 8, 2020—How2Recycle today announced The Kroger Co., the nation’s largest grocery retailer, will implement How2Recycle’s consistent and transparent on-package recycling labels on its Our Brands private-label products. Kroger plans to begin applying the labels this fall as part of its Zero Hunger | Zero Waste social impact plan and sustainable packaging goals.

“Our commitment to adopt more sustainable packaging for Kroger’s Our Brands portfolio is highly aligned with our vision of a zero-waste world,” said Lisa Zwack, Kroger’s head of sustainability. “We’re thrilled to partner with How2Recycle to provide our customers with simpler, easy-to-understand information so they can confidently recycle their favorite Our Brands products.”

Kroger’s recently announced 2030 sustainable packaging goals commit to improving the company’s Our Brands packaging in the following ways:

  • Complete a baseline product packaging footprint to fully understand current packaging impacts;
  • Seek to achieve 100% recyclable, compostable and/or reusable packaging for Our Brands products;
  • Increase recycled content in packaging so that the Kroger Our Brands products portfolio collectively contains at least 10% recycled content in packaging;
  • Reduce unnecessary packaging;
  • Increase awareness among Kroger customers about how to properly manage Our Brands product packaging at end of life.

Kroger’s Our Brands portfolio—which includes Simple Truth®, Kroger's natural, organic and free-from brand, Kroger®, Where Awesome Meets Affordable™, Private Selection®, a collection of culinary creations designed to elevate every occasion, and more—exceeded $23.1 billion in sales in 2019.
