Organic Valley Joins How2Recycle Label Program

Charlottesville, VA, May 6, 2019 — Organic Valley is the latest company to join the growing How2Recycle® label program. Consumers will soon see the label on Organic Valley brand eggs, milk, yogurt, and more in stores soon.

“As a mission-driven company, built on a foundation of environmental stewardship, sustainability and recycling are of the utmost importance to our business and our consumers,” says Jonathan Reinbold, senior manager of sustainability at Organic Valley. “We’re excited to partner with How2Recycle to better inform our consumers of the recyclability and end-of-life realities of our packaging and to further drive sustainability innovation throughout our supply chain.”

How2Recycle is the only North American-based program that offers its corporate members a customized recyclability assessment for each individual package. A package is labeled as either ‘Widely Recycled’ meaning it can be recycled in 60% or more of communities, ‘Check Locally’ meaning it can be recycled in 20-60% of communities, ‘Not Yet Recycled’ meaning either less than 20% of people can recycled that type of package or that it can cause problems in the recycling facility, or it’s labeled ‘Store Drop-Off’ meaning that it can be recycled at grocery and retail stores that accept plastic bags and wraps.

By using the label, brands make it easier for their customers to recycle or otherwise dispose of their packaging when they are finished using it.

“It’s no surprise that a farmer-owned cooperative that has positioned itself as a leader in organic farming also sees the value in transparent labeling for packaging recyclability,” says Kelly Cramer, lead of How2Recycle at the Sustainable Packaging Coalition. “Helping people know exactly how to recycle their packaging is consistent with Organic Valley’s values of keeping things honest and simple, and being thoughtful about sustainability.”

How2Recycle is also unique in that it provides a customized recyclability assessment for each package, and there are thousands of different How2Recycle labels on the market to help address the varied types of packaging in the market today. With each label assigned, How2Recycle provides the member company with insight into how they can improve the recyclability of the package.
